When I was small, I thought we would escape any Soviet nuke because we had a grand, which even a family of seven children could easily fit underneath - plus dogs, of course, and even, possibly, the ponies.Katie Grantnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-28835538992388239642012-04-20T01:55:21.347+01:002012-04-20T01:55:21.347+01:00Hurrah indeed for the piano! There's some ghastly Victorian novel about Mendelssohn, Jenny Lind et al, that features a young Sterndale Bennett sobbing because his father is pushing him to the violin when he personally dreams of the beautiful, white cold keys of the piano. It's sentimental as slop, but thirty years later I still remember that. If I could only remember what it was called...

And I totally agree about the piano's role in the home. There is no safer, more comforting refuge for a child than sitting under a grand piano while her father plays.

Lovely post, Katie - thank you so much.alberridgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15986443240923520466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-77160158632805350522012-04-19T18:32:29.974+01:002012-04-19T18:32:29.974+01:00Here here!! I visualise furious playing, smoke coming out of the instrument (& possibly also the player's ears)... Fantastic post!H.M. Not sure I agree that old pianos are for the scrap heap though - I have a perfectly playable square piano from 1806 and the recent Mozart discovery is here played on one of his:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17490070Mark Burgesshttp://www.markburgess.co.uknoreply@blogger.com
