I too can vouch for your kindness in encouraging 'new' authors - we met briefly after a talk you gave in Bath, and I was astonished when you offered to read my book about Alfred, Warrior King. This line also resonated with me, Kit, all the more because of a string of really vicious reviews of children's books in the Guardian recently. I'm a big Kevin Crossley-Holland fan; I loved the Seeing Stone books, and my copy of his Beowulf fell to bits - I used it to teach my classes at school. One dinner-lady saw it in my classroom and tried to get it banned because of the goriness of the illustrations!

What really got me about this blogpost was Kevin's remark "Trying to return the kindnesses done to me when I was beginning to write - by enthusing, and enabling others". This is absolutely true! It's thanks largely to Kevin's enthusing and kindness that my writing ever saw the light of day. He gave me a lovely endorsement that's on the cover today. I couldn't believe someone as famous as him would take such trouble over a nobody like me! What a lovely man he is -thank you for such a brilliant blog post, and I'm off to buy the Braclet of Bones, which I can't believe I haven't yet read.Kit Berryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16747077148847756149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-59172376582110507512012-03-29T10:41:04.023+01:002012-03-29T10:41:04.023+01:00Sending you thanks and appreciation, Kevin, from t...Sending you thanks and appreciation, Kevin, from the land of THE KALEVALA! In researching 16th century English history, and discovering that (for example) the English court had diplomatic contacts with Denmark, I have found myself foolishly surprised! Those northern links are almost completely ignored in most modern books on the period. There are plenty of practical reasons for that, and yet... as you say, how important it is to remember our deeply-buried affinity with our northern neighbours.H.M.
