I remember reading South from Granada when staying in a magical place a few miles south of Trevelez nearly twenty years ago and being amazed at how little anything seemed to have changed - even the clouds he describes were still floating above us. And from his village you could still see exactly the view Augustus John had painted which was on the cover of the Penguin edition I was reading…I've got a photo somewhere of me holding up the book in front of the view! I'm very envious, Sue.Lydia Sysonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04613876235125755967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-13684723720714376862014-09-16T19:51:23.047+01:002014-09-16T19:51:23.047+01:00Oh, the taste of those mulberries!Oh, the taste of those mulberries!Sue Purkisshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09084528571944803477noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-29567156922403557752014-09-16T18:43:01.259+01:002014-09-16T18:43:01.259+01:00I spent a few days in the Alpujarras about ten yea...I spent a few days in the Alpujarras about ten years ago: I did so enjoy this wonderful blog that brought it all back and also told me things I didn't know about the region. Thank you, Sue! Incidentally, I gathered some fallen chestnuts when we were there, and took them home; they were so gorgeous roasted. The olive route books are on my to-read list!Sue Purkisshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09084528571944803477noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-26605182749205425982014-09-16T08:22:34.471+01:002014-09-16T08:22:34.471+01:00Ah, Sue, you are on The Olive Route! How you take ...Ah, Sue, you are on The Olive Route! How you take me back to my travels for the book and the films. Thank you.
In my opinion, Gerald Brenan's books is one of the finest travel books of the twentieth century, certainly about Spain.
The drystone terrace walls you mention along with irrigation channels known as qanats are two of the oldest methods of irrigation around the Mediterranean. I first discovered qanats near Jerusalem on a high hill where only olives and almonds grew. Then I always looked for them.
The Moors brought a vast amount of agricultural knowledge to the Spanish peninsula. It is evident in the Spanish language. However, even before them, the Phoenicians were there and they sailed in with amphorae brimming with olive oil and wine, peacock feathers and other exotic produce, but they also brought savour faire.Southern Spain, even the arid Las Alpujarras, is a living testament to those who came before, not only to conquer but also to plant and to trade.
I could write on about this all day… it s such a rich subject and you have evoked the colours and the heat so well. I want to be there again!
