But as for ignoring the tape protecting the birds' nests; at Charmouth earlier this month I watched a kid, in full view of his parents, climbing on the cliff though there are notices everywhere saying how dangerous it is. As Hilary Mantel said in 'Fludd.' 'Christ died for our sins, but he never lifted a finger to save us from our stupidity.' (probably an approximate quote). But nowadays, stupidity is a sin, incredibly destructive. The cruise ships should be banned with immediate effect and there should be a tourist tax for all day visitors.Leslie Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15105465949970430998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-1556538310087377652018-08-11T17:19:32.848+01:002018-08-11T17:19:32.848+01:00A reduction in Venice’s aggressive seagull populat...A reduction in Venice’s aggressive seagull population, due to revised refuse-collection routines, might seem a flash of silver lining in the dark clouds threatening the city’s social and environmental survival. No such luck. An article in Venezia Nuova on 2 June, introducing a documentary film about the city’s seagulls, recorded that 24 couples of yellow-leg gulls nested on Venetian roofs in 2006. Now 500 couples nest there, an increase mirroring that of the tourists thronging the streets below. “When sorrows come, …”.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05054750491366197940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-59369291641723245462018-08-11T10:19:33.608+01:002018-08-11T10:19:33.608+01:00A very timely piece, Michelle, when more and more ...A very timely piece, Michelle, when more and more cruise ships pride themselves on visiting vulnerable places, leaving the means of destruction in their wake. How tragic it would be if their toxic emissions, their mountains of litter and their introduction of alien termites were to lead to the death of Venice, without their being held in any way responsible! The governors of the city should read your post and wake up.Lynne Bentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14412874594191347503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-91720508630179368562018-08-10T11:06:48.761+01:002018-08-10T11:06:48.761+01:00It's almost incomprehensible, How can those wh...It's almost incomprehensible, How can those who govern the city not protect it? Even out of self-interest, it makes sense to take care of it. So much craziness in the world...Sue Purkisshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09084528571944803477noreply@blogger.com
