So full of admiration for anyone with the patience to go the whole gansay in their knitting I must say.Lydia Sysonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04613876235125755967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-35273391970762513082015-11-15T08:27:43.646+00:002015-11-15T08:27:43.646+00:00Joan! There is lovely history in words and in the stuff we all take for granted.<br />Don't know about what farmers wore under their smocks though Leslie!Catherine Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14610226884546830879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-64183200342560428472015-11-14T13:25:54.430+00:002015-11-14T13:25:54.430+00:00Lovely post. We had a holiday there once, and your post has made me see the fishermen going out from there with their ganseys on. It's still very much evocative of its maritime past.I don't know why, but I used to think jumpers were modern, so silly.. Did agricultural workers used to wear jumpers under their smocks, I wonder?Leslie Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15105465949970430998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-75376898437118186632015-11-14T12:46:37.022+00:002015-11-14T12:46:37.022+00:00Catherine, I am never going to knit or sew. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this insight into the craft, and its history.<br /><br />Also loved the title: 'Gansey.' My mother, while trying to get three small children ready for school, would often say things like, "Shut up and put your gansey on!" Ending a chat or a sit-down, she would say, "This woe buy the babby a new gansey!"<br />I understood it to mean something like: any loose garment, such as a vest, shirt or smock. I never knew that it could mean a fisherman's pullover.Susan Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07738737493756183909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-50445596006616947642015-11-14T10:54:31.668+00:002015-11-14T10:54:31.668+00:00Er, like, you know, for knitting.Er, like, you know, for knitting.Joan Lennonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15763862159032836768noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502671101756463249.post-81351201428216932052015-11-14T10:53:30.815+00:002015-11-14T10:53:30.815+00:00Ooo you do stir some long-dormant lusts in me, Cat...Ooo you do stir some long-dormant lusts in me, Catherine! Wool that hasn't been washed in modern detergents is pretty waterproof. I wish I was an accomplished enough knitter to attempt these!
