Definitely Rose Under Fire. If that's cheating, I will go with Fall of Giants by Ken Follett.

I've already got a copy so won't be competing, but I just wanted to say it is a superb book! Not to be missed!

For me, it's Time Of Trial by Hester Burton. That's partly down to brilliant writing, partly down to wonderful Victor Ambrus illustrations that show the lives being lived, but also, I suspect, to reading it at just the right age (about twelve) to be swept away by the romance of the political sufferings and personal romantic promises. It did win the Carnegie Medal for 1963, so proper grown-ups clearly rated it as well!

For me, Jim Crace's Harvest did the job. I truly felt as though I was in the room with the protagonist. It had a "slow burn" effect on me, so that I didn't realise how magnificent the writing was until the end. Lots of others blew me away too, but I'm not allowed more than one choice, am I? :)

Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett, as a 10 year old girl I had read the children's section of the local library and the wonderful librarian (Sally later inspired my own work in Libraries)in charge took me into the adult shelves and brought out Ian Fleming and a James Bond, and Dorothy Dunnett's Game of Kings. The Bind was read and back in a day, but I read and then reread the game of Kings, drinking the people and places in, dreaming of Scotland and palaces, of horses and swords. I have bought all of them since and the wait on the next one through the library system was endless, but the world I opened up with that first book lives with me today. I even ended up living in Scotland, and had horses and even swords as well as bows and arrows in my life.
I have read many great books and many wonderful historical novels but this one made the biggest impression and still lives in my head to this day.
