I would have to say I have two that I admire for being pioneers in their own way, Bessie Braddock, who was the recipient of Churchill's, 'but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly' was one of the early female MP's in 1945 from Liverpool. I adore how the put down only works if she cares about her looks :-)
my other much admired female pioneer is Dorothy Parker she was one of the early female celebrities with her wit and words, she could be very unkind but rarely un-clever. I wish I had the self confidence of Bessie and the Wit of Dorothy, both stood out in a mans world when women were not expected to be seen or heard.
I would agree that the two women mentioned above are admirable. Politics has always been very male dominated until quite recently and is only slowly changing. I suppose science and medicine are the two traditionally male fields that first come to mind so women I admire here would include Marie Curie, Dorothy Hodgkin and Elizabeth Blackwell, who was, I think, the first woman to graduate from medical school. Then, in the field of mathematics, I really admire Ada Lovelace who could be called the first computer programmer.
