St Petersburg - geographically is it looks to western europe with the might of Russia at its back. I'd like to see how it tells its own story - and how different that is from the story I was told at school!
I'd like to drop into Ancient Greece, dress myself in a toga and lie back in the Mediterranean sun with a few amphorae until ye Gods and Goddesses did indeed come to speak to me.
I'd like to visit the Tower of London in the reign of Richard 111 to find out who killed the Princes in the Tower
Whitsun 1381, The peasants revolt marches on London to confront teenage King Richard the second about taxation of the poor. I'd like to be with Wat Tyler and the gang, but persuade them to do it properly and have a real revolution!
I think historical places are everywhere. I would like to go back to the young, semi-rural suburb of my apartheid childhood; to explore all the local, national and international history that a child's eyes do not always see; and to see all the new post-apartheid history that is growing up with it. I wonder if the concentration camp from the Boer War is still there?
I'd like to visit the Victorian corner draper's shop where my grandmother grew up. She told me so many stories about it, but it was demolished in the 1960s to make way for some blocks of flats. . .
I should like to visit Shapwick, Dorset in September 1843, to ask my no-good great-great-great-grandfather what he means by walking out on my 3x great-grandmother, and her with child withal and a spinster still who'll likely throw herself on the parish as needlework is so scarce these days. And I'd like to know what business he does, taking up with that Irish woman and hot footing it to Australia. The shame.
I'd like to go back to the time of the Black Death, and to reveal to them that the plague really came from the fleas from the rats, and not from evil spirits othe like. As then maybe, just maybe, I may save a few lives.
Which would be much better than fulfilling all my other going-into-history fantasies.
It would be more than enough.
Thankyou!

Eve Edwards’ post reminds me to visit a Lyons tea-shop or corner house. The name stands for all those tea-shop scenes from the first half of the twentieth century which I’d love to join. I’d watch Cassandra Mortmain eking out a cup of tea and praying for Stephen to rescue her; Laura and Alec from Brief Encounter laughing at their cellist and beginning to fall in love; and the Provincial Lady tucking into a lamb cutlet, having (again) pawned her great-aunt’s diamond ring.
I'm SO sorry I'm late but please still count my entry!!!
The historical place that I'd most like to visit has to be the Xi'an City Wall in China - it was built between 1374 and 1378 and the history surrounding it is fascinating. Since very early on, humanity lived and multiplied here. It served as a capital for twelve dynasties. I've never seen it but would love to.
