It would have to be Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy featuring Pantalaimon (Pan), a pine marten - the main character's (Lyra) daemon. Love their relationship - companionship/devotion, very moving at times.

My Favorite would have to be Elyne Mitchell's The Silver Brumby, It was the first book of animals that for me had the animals telling the story, that you felt the wind in the mane, or the ground under the hooves, I was 7 or 8 and spent years dreaming of being a horse! Best of all there are more to follow on, but the magic of the first book is still bright nearly 40 years later.

It has to be Black Beauty with its timeless themes of love and forgiveness. Despite being Anna Sewell's first and only novel, she proved her self to be a skilled writer, telling the story from the perspective of the horse, engaging generations of young (and not so young) readers.

My absolute favourite is the Tailor of Gloucester by Beatrix Potter. All of her books are beautifully illustrated, but this one is my favourite. The tale absorbs you into 18th/19th century Gloucester and the magical night of Christmas Eve as the mice make the outfit for the Mayor. Beatrix Potter is timeless and I cannot wait to share her stories with my own children one day

This was a really hard decision for me because I read so many novels with an animal as the main character. Mine would probably be Soldier Dog by Sam Angus and Bones, the loyal great dane.Bones is a brilliant loveable dog who would do anything for his master Stanley. He even made me cry at some points.

This was quite hard for me to pick, it came up against Manchee from Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking trilogy and Bones from Soldier Dog. I didn't pick Manchiee because lots of people might say he was not a main character, but for me he was.

For me it's Flush - a Biography by Virginia Woolf.
"Yes, Flush was worthy of Miss Barrett; Miss Barrett was worthy of Flush". Elizabeth Barrett of Wimpole Street, Robert Browning and Flush. The kidnapping of poor pooches seen through Flush's eyes is dramatic and heart-rending. It's an absolute must.
