I can think of lots in fiction but fewer in real life, whose story we know today. Women didn't always have the right to self-determination. The one who springs most forcibly to mind is Mary Seacole, who, when told by Florence Nightingale that she couldn't be one of her nurses, went right ahead and did it by herself. Awesome.
